Just started having this problem today with my super a When I put the tractor ino a gear it tries to stall out and when I'm in neutral it drives like is in third....I've only had the tractor a few months but the gears would grind when you change gears. I've taken the cover off and to me all the gears look fine... any advice

I assume that when you put the cover back on, you aligned all the sliding gears to neutral and got the forks properly engaged. Otherwise, you may just be stuck in third gear.

It sounds to me like the bushing in the center of the oil slinger gear has bound to the bottom shaft (as I recall, actually the hub of another gear). You should be able to verify this through the top cover. You may be able to get some penetrant into the bushing and get it freed up. If you have to remove it to free it up, virtually everything has to come apart. Go easy on the slinger, it is pot metal and can be easily broken.

Take the shifter cover off again and align the slots in all three shift rails. Two of them will be aligned, and the third will be offset. Move the offset one to be aligned with the other two. Majority rules.

Your tractor is currently in 3rd gear. You slipped the shift lever out of the 3rd-4th shift rail before it was in neutral and went back into 3rd gear. Every time you select another gear you put the tractor in two gears at once, and it binds.

Gear 40 in the linked diagram is the one Jim is talking about. Because of the difference design of the 4 forward speed transmission in these tractors if no design exception was made to address lubrication to the upper shaft it would at times lack lubrication. This is because without the slinger gear if the tractor is not moving no gears are moving that dip into the oil. This is especially a concern if the tractor was used for longer “no moving” periods of stationery belt or PTO work. The “oil slinger” gear dips down in the lube and throws it around a bit in the case lubing things up. The gear is unique being made of aluminum, this also leads it to fail occasionally. If the bushing inside of that gear sticks to the area of the gear it rides on that essentially make the tractor act like it is in gear. CNHI Farmall Super A parts catalog
Are you aware that the transmission in that tractor is not synchronized? Modern manual transmission cars and truck have synchronized gears that minimize the grinding. This means there are no provisions to equalize the speeds of the gears being shifted. So the gears grind, you just have to wait for them to slow down to engage without grinding. I have a written process to test your clutch to make sure it is releasing properly. I will find that process and post it for you tomorrow.
