i am building a ramp for my secret mens club in the woods cabin, 20 ft long, 36 inches wide. about a one to twelve rise. have 2 - 20 ft treated. 8x8 inch timbers. and 5/4 treated deck boards. all wood has been aged and dried and coated with thompson water seal. would it help to put some aluminum trim coil on the timbers before i deck screw the 5/4 down, or just leave it wood on wood?

There is a product used on roofs thats called ice guard, I think. Its kind of a rubberish tarish product that is supposed to seal around any nail penetrations and prevent water intrusion along gutters that become ice clogged in winter. Previous poster mentioned possible corrosion with metal flashing, ice guard would probably work. Wish I had used it on my hay rack main stringers (4x6) when I built them. gobble

Plastic masonry dampcourse strip is perfect for that application glennster.
At 8" a 12 " wide strip will over hang enough for the edges to curve downwards and shed water. The plastic seems to self seal around any screws or nails used to secure the deck .
I've used it for years with 100% success, after some damage to decking planks from a tree fall I replaced some that were 15 years old . The bearers under the damp course looked as if they had left the mill the week before .

We just paint wood with used engine oil for those uses. then repaint every couple years. Don't paint it on the top of the tread surface it will be slippery as ice in winter.

I built a deck many years ago using pressure treated lumber. I left it alone for 2 years, and then painted it with latex. The paint does need some touching up every other year but only for appearances sake. The deck is holding up quite well.

A few years later I used that same lumber for a backyard patio. 4x4s laid directly on the ground and then the deck boards screwed down to the 4x4s. NO paint. NO water seal. Still good and solid after about 10 years.

I would definitely use something that is U/C channel shape versus L shape or flat. Otherwise water will run inbetween and not evaporate.

A pole barn metal seller can custom make what would fit the beam. Any color you want.

A vinyl siding contractor could make the same out of vinyl.

Lowes shows a roll of pvc flashing that is 10 inches by 50 feet for 30$.
Or maybe just a heavy coating of fibered asphalt roof coating.

8x8? Will support a small lift truck!

a water barrier that sheds water is always a good idea under decking--also place the decking with the sapwood up

I used redwood 39 years ago and it is still good.

i like the roll of vinyl idea. i just ordered a roll from lowes. i had to special order the 8x8 timbers from a mill. no body had 20 footers.

No. Don't use anything that traps moisture.
Wood needs to be able to dry.
I pit shingles on steps for a Tenant.
In a year, the moisture rotted the wood.
Tenant put flower pots on deck.
Same store. Trapped water caused wood to rot.
Another Tenant had a rubber mat on deck.
Wood rotted.

What I was going to say. New pressure treated eats aluminum coil stock. Copper is usually used. Or window/door asphalt flashing.

ANYTHING you add that can hold or trap moisture is BAD!

You'd be better off treating those areas with Thompson's 2 or 3 times, then let nature take its course.

I really do have to ask glennster , I've waited for someone else to but obviously they wont and I can't wait anymore .

A secret Men's Club ? One that needs a ramp as well ?
What strange and unusual practices are meant to occur there ? :D
