Tribute hay wagon

A couple months ago I posted to get information about a tractor that belonged to a friend who passed away. I figured I should also post this here as yall might enjoy it. One of the projects that my friend had sitting around and never got to was turning the truck frame from the truck he started his business with and turning it into a hay wagon for our church to use for hay rides during our fall festival. I decided I would make it happen with the blessing of his wife.

I cut the frame and welded a plate across it so I could mount the tongue. Then I fabbed up a custom steering setup.

Next I welded on supports for the runners and attached the decking.

And finally I put on some steps to make it a little easier getting on and off.

The fall festival is Saturday at church and I'll be pulling the wagon with his M for the afternoon.

Its a remnant from the previous owner of the shop. He had a paint booth set up in the bay on the other side of the wall. That was part of his air setup, it just didnt get demoed back when all the old pvc got taken down.

Just make sure all of the insurance is paid up. One of our members brought his tractor and wagon to the annual fish fry. Free feed for the community. A fellow fell getting off of the wagon and requested the church pay the 3500.00 not covered by his insurance. The church did so he wouldn’t go after the owner of the tractor and wagon . No more hay rides.

What a nice tribute to your friend. Do you have a tag or sign mounted to recognize him?

Yeah I forgot to grab 2x4s when I was at Lowe's. Ill get them attached this evening.

Not currently. Most of the people who will be there knew him and about the hay wagon deal. Ill have to figure out something to put on it eventually though.

Well today went very well. The weather was fantastic. We have a hayride every year and my friend was usually the one who drove for it. He was definitely missed but not forgotten. I dont want to post any pictures with other people in them but I did manage to snag one before anybody boarded. And somebody got a picture of my son up asking me about all the controls.

I would be leary if that steering hauling people. Those tie rods look like they will bend. And only one bolt , no lock washer on the hitch, no good. That little bolt is doing all the work. Should have a horizontal pin and the them tie rods back and straight.

I was thinking the hitch channel should be reinforced where the tie rods tie into it. They do like to bend up there, for various reasons.

Theyre truck tie rods. And the tongue pivot has a lock nut on it. That "little bolt" also has a shear strength of 40k lbs. Ultimately I do have some ideas for a better front end design though and I'll take your advice into consideration for it. I was up against a wall for time for this year and all the metal I already had on hand.

The channel is boxed in at several spots, including up by the tie rods and at the coupler.

im ok with the actual tie rods and pipe, but that wimpy adjustment deal to the hitch looks flimsy. if you had a load of bales on it, the one pushing out would bend, due to it being so long. just looked at your first pic. with them bales and it looks bent already .

Thats the inner tie rod from the truck. I welded bolts onto the tongue but normally it would go directly into the steering rack. Its not a part I fabbed up.

Edit: what you might be seeing that looks bent is that I welded then on swept back so that it didnt max out the ball joint on the inner tie rods.

I know it’s not fabbed up and can see the bolt welded to the hitch. I was kinda presuming they fit into the rack.that’s why I was calling it flimsy , Didn’t know what truck u were referring to they came from. But I still think the weak spot is in the middle where that pipe ends. Pipe should be pretty much up to the hitch , you got the tow in set ? Lol , so u can pull it down the hyway like the john Deere wagons at 60 mph.
