Tried Something New

I haven't tried any of the newer expensive sweet corn varieties, but planted a few rows of Ambrosia this year to make my wife happy. I like to plant truckers favorite for cornmeal and watch it get 12-14 ft tall, so I watched this stuff and wondered if it would make anything. Took a while, but most of it ended up in the 7' tall range, but a good bit of that was tassel. Tested the first one pulling and eating raw walking back to the house and it is hard to imagine much better. I liked it that way better than cooked. The other thing not expected was when I shucked those little ears almost all were filled out. As expected the critters like it better than field corn, so I froze all I could over a few days in a race with them. Had a neighbor pick some over a couple of days, but it was the worst critter damage I've seen.

Also used the Lee corn cutter for the first time. I had one that was bought used, but still in the package. Couldn't find it anywhere. Bought another at Ace and it did a good job with a lot less mess, but I see where it could be hard for someone with hand/wrist problems after a few dozen. I wondered why my family never used one, but it didn't come out until after my parents were married, so I guess they just kept doing things the way they always did and cutting off with a knife and scraping. After I was done with corn my wife found the one I already had and for some reason she had put it in the back of a china cabinet. It still has the Western Auto $5.00 price tag on it. They are $17-19 today.

I feel inspired to try more and have some Bodacious seed in the freezer I may try for a fall picking and see if it does as well.

What kind of critters, raccoons? We used electric fence for that, two wires one 4-5 inches above the ground and the second at 8-10”. And if you have deer troubles one at 4 ft. Of course we were farmers and we had all the temporary fence stuff to graze cattle on some of the farmland that was in stalks during fall and early winter.

Yes. Have electric but don't have it quite that close since usually just keeping deer out.

I have planted Ambrosia for about 20 years and won't plant anything else, use a stationary knife to cut it off after blanching and cold water bath.It freezes well, we freeze about 280 bags a year.

Used cat litter sprinkled around the perimeter helps some with critters
