Trouble engine swap

So he’s paying 450.00 to major a HH60. Sounds like this belongs in Tractor Tales.
I'm sure labor rates vary geographically, but you're not getting that done for $450 in my neck of the woods. Unless your best friend that owes you a huge favor has his own shop. And when you get all done you still have remarkably low quality tune up parts that tend to fail regularly. These Predator style engines are based off of a proven Honda GX series design that is a full century ahead of those old flatheads.

I'm not gonna redo the hh60 right now because of the alternatives that "found me" recently, (described above) but both of them I have are going under the bench for now...
On the k301 idea... I thought part of the reason why TB put all of those cast iron engines on their machines in the first place was counter balancing, since they're heavier than the aluminum version.
The 301 idea isn't gonna happen with this machine but who knows in the future.its just sitting here begging to be put onto something.
It's a damn shame how even current Kohler engines are such a shell of what they used to be

Predator engine on sale $100
Here is an estimated breakdown.
NOS piston $25-50 IF you can find one.
NOS gasket set IF you can find one $25-30
New carburetor or kit for old one same price $25
Ring set $15
No Oversize pistons available, Bore block for sleeve, supply sleeve and fit to piston.
Valve and seat GRIND, not worthless lap job, and set tappet clearance. Mill head flat, all are warped. $200 labor $50 parts
Points, condensor $20 or so.
No undersized rods so clearance is corrected via resizing the rod and welding the crankshaft and regriinding. Another $100
No, it is not hard at all to out 3 or 4 times the price of a Predator in overhauling an HH60 ,, when done right. Now if you want to call slapping a set of rings in it and lapping the valves rebuilt then you use that word differently than I do. Listed is worse case scenario. Best case is rings, valve grind, head mill, gasket set, carb rebuild. With parts and labor It's still 2x what a predator costs.

No, I don't work on engines for my health, but neither am I getting wealthy at it. As I said a person not doing his own work is far better off not paying someone to rebuild his engine
I guess you’re right , those predators are too cheap to compete with. Best I could do was $250 for parts and machine work.

I bought a horse three years ago for $400. 1984? It's nearly new, likely the original tines. It came with the owners manual, brush guard, furrowing attachment, and row maker (still in the box).

It seems the worn out ones sell great for $150. Units in really good shape, like new, sit forever around $500. Parts used to be terribly expensive for them. I had one I sold around 2008. The HH60 motor was TIRED. I put tines on it for $150?. I managed to give it away for $100. I really didn't have the property for it then.

Last year a guy had an almost new (1990's) for $800. He also had the generator and plow to go with it. A month later $600, another month $400. I'm not sure if he ever sold it. I imagine he did.

For me? I'd look for another unit.
