Trouble with starter

I recently had a new problem with the starter. It is spinning but the starting gear doesn't engage the flywheel. Just a spinning sound. Can the bendix be lubed or does it require the starter to be pulled and bendix replaced? Oh, a 9N, 1941.

False alarm. I thinks it's my weak and failing 4 year old battery. I charged it a couple of hours and it cranks but battery won't hold enough charge to start it. Charger reads fully charged and it still won't turn it very long.

No lube on the bendix.. In fact.. i'd pull it to clean it with brake cleaner till it was shiny.. lube will actually cause it to drag.. and if it drags.. it will be too slow to suck in and engage.. kinda like your weak battery is causing now.. etc.

check them cables and ends while you are at it.. and buff the grounding surface o fthe starter to the bellhousing if you do pull it.. better conduction.. etc..
