TSC IM 500 Brush Hog hook up

Question: I am looking to potentially purshase a TSC IM500 5' brush hog. Does this hook up to a Ford 2N and are there issues I should be aware of?

I've never seen an IM 500 mower but some research shows that it was made by International World Agritech Corp from 1980 to 2006 when the company
went out of business. The company facilities sold and were operated for a couple of years as International Technologies. In 2008 the company
was sold to Hawkline of Nevada Company who sold mowers labeled as International by Hawkline.

I'm guessing that the brush mowers would hook up to your tractor in the same manner as any other mower. Your tractor came from the factory with
a 1 1/8 PTO shaft and 1 3/8 has been the standard for many decades. Unless your PTO shaft has been changed, you will need an adapter, and
should also use an overrunning PTO clutch.

I don't think there is any way to guarantee it will fit perfectly. If it is a cat 1 hookup, that is where you start. As far as the shaft fitting perfectly, who knows until you go to hook it up. You will probably need at least a converter to convert your PTO shaft to 1 3/8". You can get an ORC that will also do that.

Not sure on fitment.

You will want at least a ORC that adapts the pto to 1 3/8", and a set of limiter chains.

(quoted from post at 10:35:12 05/18/23) Thank you! Yes I do have an over-ride clutch on it.

Does your ORC have a 1 3/8" shaft on it? You can get an orc that will fit on an old 2N 1 1/8" pto shaft and have a 1 3/8" hook up shaft on them.

Well, looking at the pics of that mower, it makes me wonder if there is a square shaft coming from the gearbox with the outer shaft on it that will slide on that square shaft like most mowers have.

suppose it could be many shapes, but square is most common. Have seen other. As long as it slides & works, why would I care?

OK, does it slide on the model in the picture?

f course...wouldn't work if not.

I just meant that the way that guard nearest to the gear box looks, if the outer shaft has to slide over 6" or so, it would leave the shaft and "U" joint exposed at the gearbox.

My woods mower has a cover mounted on the gear box that covers that area with the "U" joint and slip clutch. Now do you understand my thinking?

The plastic guard doesn't move as it's attached to the shaft that is attached to the gear box. There is an inner part that clips to the shaft and the outer section stays stationary. The plastic shaft cover telescopes so the shaft can slide in and out. The yellow plastic is a safety shield, so you won't come in contact with the rotating shaft. On mine the shaft is triangular and you cut it to the correct length.

For the OP, the cutter will work with your tractor. Chain stays would be recommended so you can hold the cutter at the height you want. The PTO shaft if original won't mate to the cutter's spline so you will need an adapter or a new PTO shaft. An over-run clutch is highly recommended and you can buy them with the old spline on the input and the new spline on the output.

OK, thanks, that makes sense. In the picture, to me it looked like it was attached to the outer shaft. I should have known they would not be that stupid.

Make sure to be careful of this. If you raise mower up too far shaft may interfere with mower deck which can cause quite a ruckas if PTO shaft is spinning. PTO shaft may also be too long which can be fixed by taking apart and cutting one of the pieces, Make sure to deburr cut edges and lube so shaft slides freely.

I believe you need to cut both pieces, plenty of Youtube videos on how to measure and shorten a PTO shaft.

As for the plastic guard it will need trimming too just like the shaft. Keep it in place. It also has grease fittings so the shaft rotates but the plastic doesn't.

Always beware when cutting that outer sliding shaft. Those outer shafts may have the piece shown in the pic below welded into them. That square hole that rides on the inner shaft does not run all the way up that outer shaft. It only runs like the first 5 inches of the shaft. If you cut that off, you are screwed.

The first thing is to determine if it is the right length currently. If the length is ok you are good to go. Too long it will need to be cut, to short you will need a different shaft. There is much information online about how to determine the proper length of a PTO shaft and some videos.

The second thing is to determine what type of shaft it is. Slide it apart and see what the metal tube inside the outer safety guard looks like. Many are not the rectangular type of shaft but are other shapes. Other than the rectangular shafts most can be cut as needed with no concerns. Again, there are sites online that describe the types.

So, get it hooked up and see if it fits as is, then post back if it needs adjustment/cutting once you know the type of shaft it is.
