Turbocharger

I just pulled the intake off of my 6.5 litre gm. There was engine oil in the intake and in the outlet of the turbo.

Is it fixable?? seal replacement?? rebuild??

It seems to spin freely by hand. It is a Borg-Warner GM-4 p/n 10154652

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Brad, While your turbo MAY have failed, EVERY 6.2 or 6.5 ever made has oil in the intake 'cause the crankcase vent is plumbed to the intake and they ALL have blowby, ranging from a LOT to TOO #&$&#^ much!

On the turbo versions, the crankcase vent dumps into the air elbow just ahead of the turbo.

Crankcase oil vapor is carried along with the blowby and fouls the turbo, the plumbing, and the intake.

As I type this, I have the intake off of my 6.5 and it's just as you describe your's even though the turbo is OK and oil consumption hasn't been TOO bad!

So, unless the bearings are out in the turbo and it's just DUMPING engine oil into the airstream, it's likely what you are seeing is just as I have explained it.

Since I will have everything cleaned up and intend to drive this truck for a while yet, I am looking into replacing the stock crankcase ventilation system with a Donaldson Spiracle system which removes oil particles from the crankcase vent stream and returns the oil to the crankcase.
Get the oil out

I had a turbo do that. I sent it off to a repair shop, twice! I was able to verify what was going on by removing the short, straight hose between the turbo and the manifold, and running the engine. A drop would accumulate at the turbo outlet, and blow/suck across into the manifold.

The oil is from the Crankcase Breather valve that is mounted on the valve cover. A small amount of oil is normal, because it is the oil that was in the crankcase vapors.

Just to add to what Bob said... if you want to check the turbo VS emptying your wallet on a center kit for the turbo... take a close look at the turbo housings and the compressor wheel. Check for slop in the bearing. When it gets bad the compressor wheel or turbine will come close to or will actually hit the housing. Unless you're actually seeing a lot of oil use I'd suspect the broplem is just the crankcase ventilation that's returned to the intake...
