Two engine oil filters?

Picked up this engine today and as you can see has 2 engine oil filters. Is this factory or has someone added one of the filter castings instead of the blanking plate? I think this came out of a very early 1800. I have never seen this before, but maybe the early 1800 diesels had 2 filters????

Interesting. Never seen that either. You ought to email that to Chris Losey....
Thanks for sharing.

Did it have a two speed on behind it?

I see three filters, two cannister and one drop-in.
From what I can find, the Oliver 1855 diesel has 2 oil filters, a primary and secondary.

No 2 speed. Shaft and no chain coupling. Coupling similiar to a fleetline or 3 digit. I would go out and take a pic, but its raining so hard here it makes me wonder if I should be building an arc instead of working on tractors!

I looked at the parts book. The filter base on the "top" is 104130A, the bypass oil filter. The next filter base is 105215A, full flow oil filter.

I just dug out a 2001 (🤣) NAPA filter catalog out of the vault. It shows the bypass filter as a NAPA 1050 and the full-flow as a NAPA 1773.

Thanks very much. I really just bought this engine for parts, so dont know if I will be buying filters for it,but I definitley learned something new. I am assuming this being an early 1800 engine it would be a 283 ( 4 inch stroke crank?) Guess I will find out today as plan on tearing it down to see whats up with it later today. PO was pretty vauge about what was wrong with it. All he seemed to know was it just quit running??

Yea, please keep us informed and let us know why this engine “expired”. I was just a very young squirt when these engines were in wide use, but I remember tagging along with my dad and my brother to the shop at the dealership and the owner sold them complete engines to get their tractors going again.
Compared to a spin-on filter, those big sock filters were messy and were prone to leak if you didn’t replace the o-rings every time.

Newsflash: It was posted that this engine won’t be used again, but I just went to the NAPA website and the numbers from the 2001 catalog have changed. The current NAPA 1050 is a spin-on. So the info from the 2001 catalog is incorrect. Use the numbers from Scooter’s post, the current dealership offerings or the current listing from NAPA, Wix or where. 😎
Sorry ‘bout that…,,🤗

My part numbers were just the filter bases to show the difference. The two spin on filters in the parts book are 104397A for the bypass, and 155618A for the full flow. Those should both easily cross.
