Two Governor Questions

I am replacing my original 1947 2N motor with a 1948 8N motor. I was getting ready to put the original 2N governor on the 8N motor. The original motor had a stud on the top. I tried double nutting and heating it but it will not come out. I finally messed up the threads trying to get it out.

What size of bolt do I need to replace this stud? I believe it's fine threaded. I know it can't be too long so it doesn't eat into the timing gear.

Also, I was cleaning up the governor and I found this (see picture) afterwards. I am not sure what it belongs to or how to put it back.

Thanks for all your help.

interesting. i just had my governor off, 47 2N, and discovered the top bolt was actually a stud too. i just assumed it was farmerized, but 2 points might make a line here - i just have no idea where it's pointing

luckily, mine was happy to come out.

Rapidfire,Why would you want to take the correct top stud out of the governor mount. That stud was put in there at the factory so a too long bolt was not put in that hole and damage the cam gear.No spring and plunger in the fly ball governor that I know of.It looks like the oil pressure relief valve and spring. Is that a 4 ball Novi governor that you have?

The 8N motor I bought did not have a governor so I have to use the one from the original motor. I needed to move the stud since there isnt one on the new motor. I thought it would be easy double nut and remove but it wont budge. That is why I need to know the size and length of bolt to get.

As for the pic, I found that after my failed attempt to extract the stud and thought it fell out of the governor, but after googling what you thought it was, I realize it fell out the front cover when I was trying to extract the governor stud. Thanks for helping me there.

Governor from 2N and 8N have different arms because of the difference in the throttle linkage. The 2N gov will not work on your 8N engine
unless you change to 8N arms.

The 9N and 2n tractor engines used a 3-arm governor, the 8N went to a 2-arm governor, not directly interchangeable, but there's a governor manual on the other Ford N-Tractor Series Club web site that show shows to make conversion.
