Two stage clutch adjustment?

I put a new clutch in my 1958 TO 35 Deluxe. I can"t get the PTO to disengage so I can"t turn it on when I have an implement attached. I used a feeler gage to set the gap on the secondary plate to 0.089. The book said 0.090, but whith my set of feeler gauges, that was as close as I could get. could this be the problem or is there another adjustment that I am missing?

Do not set it less than .065" on the secondary (PTO) clutch, if you do there is a danger that the clutch levers and linkage will strike the plate, and if the plate does stop it will rip the levers off. What you should do now if it doesn't respond to setting it, is to take out the engine and do it properly. You should use a NEW PTO plate top set it or the clearance will not be correct...you can use the old plate if still serviceable after you have set it with a new plate though....John

Did you check the height of the levers on the clutch after you fitted it to the flywheel? Usually these days they are not set correctly straight out of the box like they used to be when they still made the tractor...There are quite a few different versions of the flywheel and clutch combination but they should all be checked and set up to specification. Do you have the dimensions of the lever tips from the flywheel face as that is critical, if that is wrong everything else will be wrong (PTO) I got your other post and it will not be the bearing as it is pressing the clutch, but check that the free play on the pedal is 3/8" between the pedal and under the footrest. These settings are critical on these dual clutches as they don't move very much inside and if they are set incorrectly or are worn they will not operate....Email me if you still have problems [email protected]

I did not set them, I gues I thought they were already set correctly. I replaced regular clutches before but this is my first two stage. I assume that I will have to split the tractor again?

Ed...Yes I am afraid it will be necessary to split the tractor again so you can set it properly. It is always wise to check ANY clutch that you fit as they don't always fit just one vehicle and the settings may not be correct for the one you are working on. If you need the information and drawings for setting your clutch email me direct and then I can send them out to you. Let me know if the flywheel is "fluted" (slotted) around the outer edge or is it just plain and if the Clutch has spacer shims between the Clutch and the Flywheel.....John
