two stage clutch

is there any way to determine which two stage clutch I have on my Ford 2000 3 cyl diesel with out splitting the tractor first?

Hey vtjoe, I'm guessing you are in Vermont like me. I'm facing the same problem with a 3000 -- see my topic, a few before yours. I'm in the Bratt area if that's convenient for putting our heads together on these issues....

There are not two different 2-stage clutches, only a single-stage (trans PTO) and a 2-stage (live PTO). One way to tell what you have is to remove the starter motor and look inside the hole with a flashlight and a mirror. They are easy to distinguish.

There are two different spline counts on those. Not sure of the numbers but I think it's 10 count and 13 count.
I suggest you do the split and Then order your parts.

I've asked around the tractor shops near me and they all use the same clutch rebuilding shop to rebuild them and set them up. They all seem to have success with them so that's the route I'll probably go when I do mine.

The parts drawing for the dual clutch assembly references 3 different versions. The first one is simply listed as 11" 15 splines, the second is 11" triangular 10 splines, and the third one is 11" round 10 splines.

Did the 3 cylinder Ford tractors use the same style 2 stage clutch as the 1955 to 1964 tractors, or did they change to something more like MF used?

The 15 spline was used 65/Sept69
The 10 spline was used Oct69/up
My old parts book refers to the 10 spline triangular being used in the 3400 utility
The change over dates are not always correct as Ford would often use up the remaining inventory of older parts before making the actual change

Personally I'd split the tractor and see what clutch it has before ordering parts, would also be a good time to replace the two transmission input shaft seals

They are completely different clutches. The only thing that is the same between them is their overall function from the operator's perspective.

thanks for the replies! I do a lot of mowing/brush hogging and the PTO part of the clutch is tired I do believe. And from from numbers on tractor, it is a 1968 model 2000. So it seems that the proper thing to do is split then order parts.. thanks all
