U govner help

I just got a U and the intake was trashed I ended up getting a LP intake and it changed where the carb sat so the govner rod was too short. I added 1/2" to it and it just got off idle, I re-Mesured and ended up adding an additional 1" not it goes straight from idle to WOT and it is screaming! there is also an external spring to return the carb to idle. so here is my question with the throttle closed how much slop should on the govner also any pictures would really help. Thanks

Sounds like your linkage going to the carb may be too long. With the hand throttle wide open and the carb link disconnected from the gov arm, the link should extend beyond the hole on the gov arm by 1/2 the rod diameter when the carb butterfly is wide open. I had the same problem you desribe on a GTA, all it took was bending the linkage to make it the correct length.

Make certain it operates smoothly though the whole range once you have got it to the proper length. With the engine not running and the hand throttle is at idle, you should be able to lift the carb link to wide open and let loose of the rod. It should fall back to the idle postion without the need of an external spring.

Good Luck!

I agree with SWmoline you should not need an external spring, (NOT STANDARD). All linkage from carb to governors, (ANY MAKE) are made in wide open position. Never in the idle position.

PS: However 1/2 hole long on a U may cause it to hunt or surge. Fine tune for best preformance.
PPS: If you are splicing rod to make longer or shorter extra rod lap and weld may make your rod heavier and effect gov action.

I just want to confirm that I'm reading this right. At WOT the the linkage should be 1/2 the rod diameter LOWER then the governor hole.

Not 1/2 rod diameter above right?

Thanks!

Chris.

I have my linkage adjusted at WOT as per your instructions.

At an idle, the engine slowly sucks the throttle plate open - causing the engine to run faster and faster all by itself.

Other then the weight of the linkage, what holds the throttle plate closed?

These governors sure are frustrating!

OK so I think that I have the length figured out but it still seems to be having issues with it now getting full throttle basically what I ended up doing was adding a tack weld to the cut rod to make up the space I need now if I put it in 5th gear and drop the clutch she starts to lug and if I go balls out on the throtle it hits high RPM and then falls to about 3/4 I hooked it up to a solid object and when it hits a load it throttles up but then falls back down to 3/4 throttle I come from the land of farmalls where if you give it full throtle regarless of load it will go to full throttle any wistom on this issue would be great I am hoping to get this dialed in by this weekend.

Sounds like you might have a lot of internal wear. With the throttle handle (Lever) in approx 1/2 open position grab the lever on the gov that has the carb rod hooked to it. And see if you have any loose movement up and down. There should be NO free travel!(or very very little). If so your gov is working only to make up the slop and not moving the carb butterfly.

PS: Sorry I did not get back to you soonner, I only have time to check this forum once every day or two. We may be hard pressed to get you fixed up by this weekend.

I did what you were saying and I had no movement downward but I could take the linkage and move it to the point that the carb was at WOT. what I ended up doing was adjusting the stop on the outside of the govner to allow more movement on the throttle side and it seems to go wide open now? not sure if that is the wright way to get it handled but for now it seems to be working when I hook it this weekend I will have to check and see what it does under a load thanks agian for all of the help.

Take the small cover with 4 slotted head screws off the gov. Grab your gov arm up and down and check if the hole on the inside arm has a elongated hole. Also if the shaft is loose in the bore. It may need new bushings.
