U302 starter issue

We had stored Dads 1967 U302 super for the winter. Had a maintainer on the battery and stabilized gas. I tried to start it and after about 5 seconds it hadn't fired so I let off of the key. The key went back to the expected position....but the starter kept cranking....I had to pull the battery cable to get it to stop cranking. When I put the cable back on it wasn't cranking....but every time I try it I get the same result as above. Also....not once did it fire. It was running fine in the fall.
Thoughts?
Why does it continuing cranking ....do I have 1 problem or 2 separate problems?

Possibly a solenoid sticking. Possibly switch not cutting off power or wire issue.

Happens when the battery doesn't have enough power/charge to properly turn it. The drive hangs up and i have to disconnect the battery and pull the starter just enough so the drive retracts. Happens on my Big Mo, JS3, and U when the battery is on its last leg.

Every thing that John and Jocco posted is correct. When that happens on the older tractors with the small solenoid I Just rap them with my pliers and the plunger in the solenoid will release. Put a full size charger on it to bring the Batt up to full charge or jump it with another vehicle. check all your Batt connections. Some may have corroded over the winter and caused resistance. Crank it over for a short period and take your hand and cautiously touch each Batt and starter connection and see if any are hot or warm. If so you, have a poor connection. .

Thanks all. We have a battery tender on it right now and I will hook up my jump pack this weekend and try it. We did put a new battery in last summer....and had a tender a winter ...but...free to try first
