Uneven Idle?

Bought a ford dexta set for along time.
Got it running. Won't low idle. Idles about 800. But it surges up and down wont idle steady.If it was and old detroit diesel we wouuld call it a roll in the idle, hunts, smoothes out about 1600 with a slight miss. Any ideas?

sounds like carb issues. someone with more experience can steer you further

Gas or diesel?

If gas, problem is a lean idle mix. Possible causes are a vacuum leak, a lean idle mixture setting or plugged idle circuit.

If diesel it could be an improperly adjusted buffer screw on the injection pump. Otherwise problem's inside the pump - a fix is best left to a good diesel pump shop.
