unknowen lever

I have a 1952 8 n ford. It has a little lever under the seat next to the lever for the lift on the three point. What does this lever supposed to do?

Handle should be DOWN (forward) for moldboard plowing (draft control) and UP for almost all other operations (position control).

Check out tip # 39. These manuals will be a great source of information.

The only time the draft control lever needs to be down (in draft mode) is when you are plowing. If the plow hits hard dirt, the tractor slows, the draft spring (the big one behind the seat) engages which in turn causes the internal linkage to raise the plow.....and the tractor keeps moving. Pretty slick technology for 1939.

In the up position, the internal linkage controls the position of the lift arms. If you set the touch control lever w/ the lift arms half way up, that is where they will stay. Not so w/ the 9&2N’s, which did not have position control. The only way to get position control on a 9&2N is to add an external jig sold by one of the regulars here, Zane Sherman.

I'll go one further. I found it useful when mowing my two acres of waist/chest high grass and weeds for the first time this year. I found it quite helpful in keeping my 72" finishing mower (only mower I have) from bogging down when the grass got to thick.

I discovered it by accident when I finally got some significant seat time recently. Before I was having to manually control the lift by minute movement of the lift lever.
