Hey all, I just aquried an engine for my wood splitter, but have no idea on what year it is or what the horse power is, The thing is brand new, never been ran, I had to fill it with oil, it is old enough to have an oil bath aircleaner on it. I have the model number which is 143302, the type number is 0111 01, and the serial number is 414582. It was just given to me, it has a 1inch horizantal shaft on it with a quarter inch keyway, so imn geussing that is a bigger engine, and the last question is how do you get the rewind thing off to get the flywheel off, i got the cover off, and the top portion of the thing that has the 4 bearings in it, but i cant get the bottom thing off to get at the nut for the fly wheel, and i need to get it off because it rusted and there is no spark. The rewind thing on the flywheel you took apart is the starter clutch. You DO NOT take it apart. You unscrew the whole thing as it is also the flywheel nut.

so just how do you go about gettin it off, pipe wrench, channel locks, ??? Thanks Bob

there is a special wrench,but ive used a pipe wrench..carefully

You could use a pipe wrench,large channel lock pliers used carefully,or use a hunk of furring strip,2x3 etc & tap gently with a hammer on opposite ears of recoil clutch till same breakes free,then thread off

Go to NAPA, they sell a special wrench for the starter clutch, I bought one, works good.

You will have to remove the screen, so take it off, then screw the little cap screws back in their holes. Using a flat punch, tap on those "ears" to remove the item from the crankshaft. Try to block the flywheel from turning. They made a tube-like tool to use on the bare round end of the crankshaft, to beat on it to remove the flywheel. It had a soft insert in it, to protect the end of the crankshaft. A quick sharp rap with a BFH usually takes off the flywheel, hold the opposite end of the crankshaft off the floor or bench.
