Somewhere along the top of the block, maybe a couple inches down from the head at most, will be a machined flat spot with the engine's serial number and possibly the model designation on it. The model may also be cast right into the block. It will be raised letters D-something, as it is a diesel.

In your last photo there appears to be something on the side of the block, kind of over the back of the alternator and below the head. Is that a data plate?

Thank you looks like your all right

number looks to be
236 0
109352

sorry it is upside down

Thank you to this great forum

It's a Perkins, with the hydraulic governed pump. Never used in an MF combine. The 410 used a Perkins 4.300, and the 540 used the 4.318 which replaced the 300. Both of those engines used a cross flow head, 236/248 four and 354/372 six did not use a cross flow head.

so what engine was in the combine? I know it was a 4 cyl. perkins. that was the option gas or diesel.

Read again, 410 used the Perkins 4.300, and the 540 used the 4.318 four cylinder. The MF 300 did have the Perkins AD4.203 option, but MF dealer I worked for never sold any. The Perkins 4.236 was never in any combines I've seen, and especially would NOT use the hydraulic governed injection pump as it's too sluggish for close speed combine use.
