That was my first thought also. It won't go into reverse unless it's in low range.

Yep serves me right for making an assumption. It should also move the hi low lever to low when you move the shifter lever to reverse if everything is free it will slide in automatically you don’t have to move the hi low first. If it’s stuck like said above that would do it. I wouldn’t be terribly concerned about water in the transmission it’s time to change it. The straight 140 gl1 that’s in it seperates to a nasty white goop it absorbs water. I’ve seen some out of a new pail that I didn’t use the last quart because the water collected at the bottom. They would put diesel fuel in it and run around for awhile and dump.

They changed to straight 90 at least on the late A. Either of those that you can find would be fine but should be GL1-3 no 4

Yes put camera in transmission the shifter lever is dragging on the plate that rides between top shifting rail and lower one can't seem to figure out how to shim it up away from the plate any advice be appreciated

If you could post a picture of what pieces are rubbing together might help solve the puzzle.

Is the snap ring missing on the shift lever? The snap ring is supposed to hold the shift lever 'up' to allow the shift ball to move through the gate between the shift rails in the transmission. Sometimes the snap ring and groove get worn and lets the gear shift slip down and not let it get through that gate. If you pull up on the shifter while changing gears does it shift properly? If so the solution is to either replace the snap ring if it is missing or get a new gearshift with a nice clean sharp snap ring groove.
