Unstyled John Deere Model B

I always turn the gas off at the sediment bulb and let the tractor run until it is out of gas. Sometimes I get a very loud backfire just before it runs out of gas. Any ideas? Carburetor? Sticky exhaust valve?

That happening is normal and my 1935 JD-B has done that ever since it has been in he family and that started back in 1940 when my grand father got it. That is how he shut it off and I still remember my grand mother saying she knew with my grand father had shut down the tractor because she heard what sounded like a shot gun going off
