Urgent help ford 3910

RTC3910

New User
I have been fighting an issue with my starter trying to crank when I connect battery. I suspect my wires are crossed somewhere. Please help figure how this needs to be wired. Warning my wire colors are screwed up.

This is my starter connections. I have the ground from battery and positive from battery. I have a red and black from key I assume and another red that comes from/to battery.

This is the red wire that is by itself to or from key switch I presume.

This is red and black together from key I assume.

This is from positive battery.

This is negative from battery.
I know negative battery goes to frame and starter, positive goes to center post of starter. I am blank from there. Beyond frustrated. Thanks in advance.

If I recall correctly, you should have one small wire from alternator, one small wire (which would probably be the bigger of the small wires) to ignition/light switch as a supply, and one back from ignition switch back to starter solenoid.(this one would be energized with 12v when you turn ignition switch to start position). Wire to ignition switch and alternator go with large starter cable on solenoid. Negative battery cable goes to stud on front of starter, can't recall off the top of my head exactly where wire back from ignition goes on solenoid! (w/r on picture, the one energized when switch is turned to start position).

here is the wiring diagram for the starter solenoid #23 and a key to the numbered items. Take a meter and find the 12v feed wire going to switch (originally bigger than the other two) and touch this wire with meter lead and while someone turns key, find the wire that shows continuity when switch is turned to start, and then loses continuity when switch is released. that wire is the w/r wire that goes to coil of solenoid. you should be able to trace the other wire back to alternator.

Thanks everyone for the replys. When wiring the starter up, and I think it is wired correctly, when connecting battery back up it is wanting to start. Could the solenoid by stuck? Could the key switch be bad? I tried a new switch and the same thing. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Did you ever check for 12v coming back from ignition switch with key off? Does it actually turn motor when you hook up battery? if so, I'd say your solenoid is bad !

It is hard to tell from the photo, but the contact plate (P) for the wire from winding 1 may be contacting the battery stud (B) connector. If so, winding 1 would get power whenever you connect the battery. That should make the starter motor turn, but the drive gear would not be engaged into the engine starter ring gear. The starter motor just spins freely, that could be what you call "wanting to start".

Make sure that you have a 10 mm (3/8 ") gap between the components.
