Urgent pinion load advice needed
I’m finally getting to put my 1370 back together.
I’m attempting to set the NO load rolling torque on the pinion bearings and I’m having trouble.
I bought a beam type Inch torque wrench from NAPA and I’m having trouble.
The beam scale is in 25inch pound readings. (0-25-50-75 and so on)
The Case manual that I have says to tighten the nut on the pinion until you have “NO” end play which I did with a dial indicator and to check the “NO” load rolling torque which to the best I can determine is only 25inch pounds. (This is part of my problem the readings are so low my wife and I are having trouble reading the torque wrench)
It then calls for the pinion “NO load rolling torque to be increased an additional 25-35 inch pounds.
At 25 in lbs I can roll the pinion at the nut with my fingers. At the tightened position I can still turn the pinion but it’s hard to do.
Right now the best we can tell we have a “NO” load rolling torque of about 50-60 inch pounds.
What I need to know from the Case mechanics is this, are these readings about right for doing a pinion job on a 1370 tractor.
And once the “NO” load rolling torque is set should it be just snug enough where you would have trouble turning it with your fingers?
Needless to say I wish I had purchased a dial type torque wrench. Its hard to do this with a beam scale wrench when you have trouble reading the scale.
I have done several truck pinions before but for some reason this thing seems difficult.
I did seat the bearings and the bearing cups are set properly and the readings are done on lubed bearings.
I’ve got some help coming tomorrow to roll the thing together so hopefully I can finally get this thing finished. I have had to get parts from 5 States so far and I’m getting tired of working on it.
