i have a pc with windows xp, i guess it is about gone, lots of problems memory storage etc. i thinking of a used one with windows 7. i would like your input on doing that. it seems they are about half the price of a new one with 8. what do i need in storage, memory etc. thankd

Just about anything you buy today, even used, will most likely have better performance than what you have now. If you click on the Windows icon at the bottom left hand corner of your screen, and then click "computer", you can see what your current system has for a processor, memory, etc.

Do not get windows 8 unless you are getting a tablet with touch screen. That is what 8 is designed for. A pain in the butt for a keyboard user.

As of this year Microsoft is no longer supporting the Windows XP platform anymore. In other words if you want anything new your pretty much stuck with going with the new Windows 7 or 8. Personally I"ve got 7 on my computer and I like it just as well as I did XP. Then again it has the ability to mimic XP with the correct settings. On the other hand my buddy has a new computer with 8 on it. He"s one of the younger crown that"s into all the smart phone technology, and he loves it. Personally I wouldn"t have it unless I had absolutely no other choice. I just keep on waiting for them to come up with a Windows version called something like "we got it right and are going to leave it the heck alone this time" and be done with it. Unfortunately I don"t see that happening unless everyone would come together and refuse to buy the latest and greatest.....

I too bit the bullet and replaced XP with windows7
You can get windows 7 as a 32 bit system....DON'T.
It maxes out at 4 Gb. of ram. Get the 64 bit system so you can get more the 4Gb of memory 8Gb would be nice............

You can still buy new computers with Win7. I got one recently from Bestbuy.com. There aren't any left in the stores, but lots on the internet.

I have had Win7 on my Toshiba for four years now. I like it. I heard there was a lot of problems with Win8. Windows9 is coming out some time next month

W7 is great, get it if you still can.

Get W7 64 bit and 8GB RAM in it, well worth the money. You need the 64 bit OS to access memory past 4GB.

I have been running Windows 8 for almost a year on a desktop. I installed Classic Shell a free program and set it for the desktop to be default. It pretty much runs like windows 7 did. Very rarly use the Metro screen. On the tablet I have 8.1 and use the metro screen most of the time. When I first got Windows 8 there were some issues but now it just runs. We use Outlook for mail. So everything looks like it did when we had Windows 7.

All depends what you're doing with it. If it's simply for going on the internet and basic stuff, you don't need anything too fancy. 4GB ram is LOTS if doing what's listed above. If you game, (which I can't see, because you run .99GB ram with no video card), then you'd benefit from a 64bit OS, which in theory, can support a ridiculous amount of ram, in practice though it's usually less than 20GB.
Were you at one point happy with you're system? 3.39 Ghz is a decent processor, even for today, but the # of cores could make a difference.
Ram is cheap and can be updated easily enough.

It would help if you could provide us with some information. I can tell you how to get the information. Go to Start menu>My computer> right click Local Disk(C>left click properties. This will tell you your hard Drive capacity.

Next go to start>All programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. In here is listed the OS, either Windows XP Home or Pro. The next line will list the Service Pack(either 1,2, or 3) Below that is listed the motherboard brand and model(listed under System Manufacturer and System Model)

Next go to start menu> right click My Computer. List processor name.

So basically I'm looking for OS, Service Pack, Mother board brand and model and processor name and model

April is when they're ending support for Windows XP. They may be giving a sneak peek of Windows 9 in April, 2014. Windows 8.2 is also due to be released soon, to make Windows 8(.2) more simliar to 7, and by default, more simliar to XP. XP is where it's at. There's a reason business' were so reluctant to switch over.

Nothing will happen. It just means that windows will no longer furnish up-grades, or look for security holes. XP will continue to be fully functional for you.

The lack of up-grades or up-dates MIGHT be a blessing in disguise. At least they won't be messing around with your settings and such.

CB, whatever you do with your "old" puter DO NOT give it to ANYONE you don't know. Because if they know computers they can and WILL get inside of the hard drive and get ALL of your personnel info from it including CC numbers,passwords any info or view ALL websites that computer has EVER BEEN TO !!! Just a warning... only way around it is to actually BURN THE HARDDRIVE in a HOT FIRE for a good day or two.
