using heater on trans pan ok?

I have one of the magnetic block heaters. I have been using it on the hyd fluid on my 2N. Really helps with the 3pt warming up faster. Am I causing any harm to the system doing this? I am thinking of buying another so I can put one on both pans. Thanks Scott

I don't see how it could get hot enough to do any harm.

You can even buy flexible silicone rubber heater pads with self-stickum for attaching them to oil pans or sumps.

I found some 50W ones surplus some years ago. I wire 2 in series so they make more gentle heat and over more area. 2 - 50W units in series draws half the current through both so each makes 1/4 the power, or 25W total for the 2. I got a couple of strong magnets from Radio Shack to hold the heaters on the block or pan with some fiberglass insulation over them. Be careful with magnets and high temps - if you reach the Curie point for the magnet it will drop off and the heater could start a fire.

I use them mostly as "dew chasers" - also on my cast iron power tools - we have 5F right now but New England can warm up quickly and then everything gets condensation and rusts. I put these on when we get the damp warm-up and it is just enough to kill the sweating.

I don't know where you're at, but up here in the COLD north country pretty much every auto part store/NAPA is a dealer for them.
