Using up old gas

I have about 3-4 gallons of old gas in a piece of equipment I bought. It stinks, gives me a headache. I put some on a dipstick and it burns to some extent, not enthusiastically. Has anyone mixed small amounts of gas like this with their regular gas? Not saying I plan to do this, just want to see if that’s an option. Saving it for a burn pile is another possibility. I don’t think they collect it where I drop off my used motor oil.

Around here, they don't accept it. When I changed the tank on OMRB I had about 1.5 gal of crude. I decided to let it evaporate down to varnish and then trashed the residue.

Mix use it as fire starter or charcoal lighter. If it is too volatile, add some diesel to it. Many years ago, I had about 2 gallons of bad (smelled like varnish) gas in my 8n. Filled the tank with fresh gas and ended up with a foul running tractor with 10 gallons of bad gas in it.

If it is leaded gasoline, the lead will contaminate the charcoal and result in contaminated food. Jim

Our oil recycling facility in ST.Cloud has a gasoline receptical in one building. Jim

I take my old oil to the town hi-way garage, they use it to heat the building. At times I have mixed in bad gas in the 5 gallon cans. The quantity in their tanks seem to handle the mix OK. But I have never had that large of an amount.

Thanks. I’ll find another use for it. I won’t risk mixing it in with my car or tractor gas. It’s lost its mojo, too far gone. Just need to empty the tank into a well-sealed gas can because boy does it stink. I have it sitting outside my shop right now.

I'd mix it and run it in an old tractor, but for sure I wouldn't put it in a modern fuel-injected car. Carb kits are cheap and old tractor carbs are relatively easy to work on. Fuel injection systems are neither.

Everyone likes to say, the solution to pollution is dilution... Here's a perfect opportunity to prove the concept.

I had to get rid of some old gas (very old) and mixed it in with my lawn mower gas a couple quarts per about 5 gallons. Took all summer and I did have to replace the fuel filter. Not sure if it was worth the effort, but it's behind me now.

I had a 2 cycle Lawn Boy mower at the shack. It sat with gas in it from the summer before. When I got it running it sounded like the muffler had a hole in it. I ran it empty , turned it upside down but couldn;t see anything wrong with the muffler. Filled it with fresh gas mix & started it up & the noise was gone. That old gas must have been burning so slow it was burning in the muffler to make that sound.

In my area the county has its own recyle facility. Although it’s a 40 minute drive to the far side of San Bernardino they take anything. They are open daily and only 2 people working. They don’t even want you walking on the ground. They come and unload for you. Very nice people who seem glad you’re doing the right thing.
On the other hand my city spent over a million dollars to open its own center. They only take oil. And they don’t take gear oil or power steering fluid. Then only open for the morning on Saturday. And the line is ridiculous. The people there are arrogant and act like they are doing you a favor. One started yelling at me because I moved my oil to the tailgate before he could inspect it. More than once have I experienced their behavior. I don’t go there anymore. Because if I did someone was going to regret it.

I would mix the old gas with my used oil and once a year when snow is on the ground, I'll burn off a brush pile that is in a large fire pit down in an old abandoned gravel pit.
If it stinks I would not use it.

There was someone like that in the previous county I lived in. Not arrogant but extremely hostile and always seemed like he was ready to blow a gasket. Once accused me of tossing out a prohibited item and only backed off when I asked him if he’d seen me come in with the item, which happened to be a mattress. He had not. It’s surprising he got so upset because there was so little oversight of what people brought in. On several occasions I snagged nice power tools that homeowners were ready to toss in with the general waste.

Put it in a old bucket and set it a fire.
