VAC oil filter ?

The VAC I recently bought has a spin on type oil filter. I stopped at NAPA today and gave them the number. The number was obselete, but cross referenced to another NAPA filter number. He had one so I says "I'll take it". WOW, $18.90 for an oil filter??? It is a spin on with "mason jar" type threads. Is this correct?
 
You do it back wards. If your changing oil you need to change the filter but you can get by changing the filter to every other time you change the oil but NEVER the other way around because the filter clogs up before the oil gets bad. There was even a test done many many years ago that proved you could extend the life of oil if you changed the filter more often but doing it like you do you in fact make good oil dirty for the get go since new oil will pull out dirt etc from the oil filter and put it back in the system which is very bad
 
Hi old: I have never heard of your way before.
Not disagreeing, but rather asking others for conformation or better yet location of any valid tests info to change filtor more often is more important then changing oil etc... Thanks. ag
 
That was the old school way of doing things so as to save a few $$$. My grand father would do that on his cars and truck so as to save $$ but that was also back when a buck would get you 5 gal of gas
 
Hi Old (again) Yes,I suspect various ways are Habits from years ago based on various ideas... but my question was in search of Test Data preformed to back up which way keeps less dirt away from getting pumped back through the engine lube system. Proof? Maybe a University Engineering study? Maybe a high grade Automotive Tech School test results? How much dirt can a filter take before it is in need of replacement? Just look at it or examine the particles vs filter element in detail? etc..
Some air filters have a method to indicate a need to replace the filter. Not so on common old auto or old tractor filters.

Anyone know of test results?? Thanks. ag.
 
I have a VAC Case and a TO-20 Ferguson. These engines are quite similar as they as well as others are descendents of the Continental line of engines. The point I would like to stress here is that these old machines have bypass oil filtration systems not full filtration systems like more modern engines. My first car was a 61 Chevy Impala with the same bypass filter in a canister that was mounted away from the engine. This was better than no filter, but not by a whole lot in my opinion. Probably less than 25% of the oil went through the filter. The other 75% may goe across the bearings several times before going through the filter. One thing I have found is that the small hole that supplies this bypass stream of oil to the filter has been plugged with dirt/carbon. I found this on both the Case and the Ferguson. If that is plugged and you're only dealing with 10-20 psi of oil pressure you're not getting much/any flow of oil through the filter anyway. My suggestion is while the filter is to inspect the passage ways or on the VAC pull the coil wire or leave the ignition off and crank the engine to see if there is any oil coming out. On the Ferguson here at home it is a well worn engine with not much oil pressure anyway. My guess is most of the oil is taking the path of least resistance across the bearings. This brings to mind another point. If the tube or passage feeding the oil filter is plugged and you unplug it now some of the dirty oil that was going to the bearins is now going through the filter. We may be filtering the oil, but we may have been as well off feeding more volume of dirty oil to the bearings. I have rambled on long enough now. But my key point is that the oil filtration system on these machines was pretty poor anyway. The full flow oil filtration system is far superior. Jim
