Married for 15 years and my wife has never had a good vacuum what are some good recommendations. Dyson, filter queen, rainbow, hoover ??????

Of all the vacuum we have had over the years we like the Electrolux, Dirt Devil and Eureka airspeed for pets. Wife did not like Kirby or Rainbow. Rainbow uses water to catch dirt and are messy to empty and clean. My wife and mother both hated the Rainbow machines.

What ever you get, make sure it has a HEPA filter. The old ones would put the fine particles back in the air.

Most woman like up right models. I like canister models so I can go after dust bunnies under the bed.

Buy a Rainbow. You will never buy another. We have two. I don't know that the newest E series are any better (we bought one new for upstairs). I personally like the D4SE that we have downstairs. I bought it with a new motor and warranty off of eBay years ago. I think I gave $300 for the power unit plus some some attachments.

Get her the stair attachment. If is very good for lots of things including stairs.

There will be lots that talk about the "hassle" of filling the trap with water. I'll tell you, that is the only vacuum I have ever been around that doesn't make me sneeze when it runs. They are worth their weight in gold. It really cleans the air.

I bought a Dyson DC 14 about 10 years ago. It still works great. No bags to buy, just change the belt and filters every 3-4 years, all good.

I sold then for awhile many, many moons ago and had the opportunity to compare it against just about every other vac on the market.

I bought a cheap ($80) Eureka Airspeed at Target three years ago and love it. It will suck the chrome off a trailer hitch but is so light you could twirl it like a baton with one hand. Easy to take the trap out to blow out, too. No filter to replace, but has hepa filter you can blow or rinse out. For $80 I couldn't beat it with a club.

Dyson is very good buy way over priced. Hoover has always been a good and well made unit. Go to several SERVICE centers and ask what the guy in the back fixing them thinks. Almost everything now is the collector bucket type and don't have bags. About $200.oo would be a pretty fantastic machine. The old KIRBEYS were built like tanks and weighed as much. Remember them?

A Kenmore "Progressive" is all you need. As already mentioned, just bring it home one day not as a present.

Ever thought of a ducted system ?
I bought one thirty years ago , it cost about half as much more than a decent barrel vacuum and of course took a bit of effort to install myself . Since then it is still going strong , it doesn't use bags , has a huge dust receptacle and exhaust fine dust that gets past the filter outside through an exhaust muffler . Very little noise inside at all .
The hose reaches through three big rooms at a time , no bending down and fiddling with plugs and power outlets as I put in the hose points at about 600mm off the floor . Our fairly big home only has three points . There is also a really useful kitchen floor ' dustpan ' inlet , it lets you sweep the crumbs and bits that collect in the kitchen each day up to it , a simple foot lever activates the vacuum and it all disappears without having to get the hose out .

Do like a friend did and install a central vacuum system. He's got a basement so he installed some 2" plastic pipe in his basement and had a couple of outlets upstairs to hook a hose onto. Plugs in his shop vac in the basement and it works great. He has one of those wireless recepticals so he can start the shop vac from upstairs. Easy to install with plastic pipe and very cheap and it really works great.. Probably cost less than $50.

I did the central vac, I was building the house so running tubing thru the walls was a snap. No basements on the left coast so it only made sense during the build. And I'm on a slab; earthquake faults on both sides of me, so I wanted the strongest foundation possible.

Just got an Oreck & it can't be beat. Tried shop vacs, all major brands, nothing works like this thing. Factory 30' cord, plug in at one location & do nearly the whole house. The wife thinks its the bee's knees.

Since you have been married just fifteen years, chances are you will be married another 35. We bought the second house that we have lived in 1978. There was an old Filter Queen in the house that still worked well so we used it. I expect that it was 20 years old at the time. Well, we replaced it two years ago, so that means that it was approx. fifty-eight years old. I still use it in my shop. It always worked well, and the cost per year's use was peanuts.

Filter Queen, no contest. We have a pair that are over 50 years old and still working fine.

None of today's plastic crap can compare, no matter how much you spend.

Years ago wife told me a friend at work said "anything with a plug-in is not a gift", so I got her a chainsaw for Christmas that year. I ca see pretty good now.

Dyson is "good", but I would not buy one at the new price. They have "as new" refurbished for less than $200 sometimes, some models. Got an old DC14 at Goodwill over 5 years ago, they thought the belt was bad. I looked through it, nothing wrong, they just had the knob wrong. Has worked fine, much better than a Hoover Windtunnel I had. Paid ...$25.... If I were looking today, I'd look through either Shark or refurb. Dyson, and know that I would get a decent one with either. No doubt some may be better or cheaper, but "good", and "works just fine", and cleans up all visible dirt, good enough for me, no reason to spend more. And something that does not take bags is very handy.

My mom is 80, not supposed to lift stuff, or do things like sweep, and can't really vacuum. I got her a Neato (robot), like a Roomba but better. It only goes over an area once, so it's faster than a Roomba. It maps the room with a laser, then vacuums in mostly straight lines, finishes one room before moving to the other (if there are doorways), and if the battery gets low, it goes to its base, charges, and continues from where it left off (but it does a fairly large area on a charge). Basically, she pushes a button, and the floor gets vacuumed by itself (you can also set timers). She has multiple cats, dirt gets dragged in, etc., floor is very clean after the thing runs. Of course it's not for heavy duty use, but it can keep up better than you'd think. They aren't cheap, not as reliable (buy with a credit card, most extend the warranty for free), but can't beat them for what they are in some situations. Some look at them and think they are worthless, but in use, they work very well.

As far as gifts go, people have different ideas for what they want. My dad got my mom a 12v/6v battery charger, and she liked it, used it often (and about the only thing he ever bought her for a present, he did not observe holidays). Place was hers, she did all the stuff outside, milked cows, pulled calves, put on shingles, fixed fence, fed cows, hayed, and everything else, so she used anything like that.
