value removal

Do you have your lift cover off? If so, it should be self explanatory. If not, ya gotta take it off to get to the valve.

I'd sure like to know if there's a way to delete ( our own )dumb posts. I sure make some doozies sometimes!

It is the hydraulic control valve (I think) the one that controls the lifting of the hydraulics
I looked to find a way to delete this post and start over after I saw I spelled the subject wrong

To remove the lift cover do I just remove the four bolts behind the handle that raises and lowers the hydraulics? Is that the lift cover?

Good read.
You really need a manual.
I don't like to be disagreeable, but I can't agree with Poot in saying that you have to remove the lift cover to access the Control valves. You can get to them via the right side circular port that has the hyd dip stick in it. In the 9N, the single control valve just slides out after you disconnect the linkage. As for your 8N, I "expect" that the answer is similar, but someone who has actually removed the Intake Control & Exhaust Control valves on an 8N should chime in here and definitively answer this, as there is an item in the I&T manual called "exhaust valve retainer pin" that may very well come into play.

Not to be repetitive....but you really do need a manual if you are going to get into the pump.

The lift cover is under the seat, but it's more like 14 bolts, not 4. The 4 nuts you see hold the lift piston to the cover. DO NOT remove those to remove the lift cover.

But, more to the point, there are 3 valves: intake, exhaust & safety. I assume you want to remove the intake & exhaust valves. If so, the rocker, held in by a pin & cotter key needs to come off & then the valves slide out. I'm not sure you can do that through the inspection ports.

Now to a question for you: why do you want to remove the valves in the first place? If you want to clean the pump out, you have 2 choices. You can do the "quick clean" or you can drop the pump. Tips 3 & 4 below will tell you how to change the fluid.

After you get the old fluid drained out (overnight is best) remove both inspection plates & start pulling the sludge in the pump base out by hand. Then, get a couple of gallons of kerosene or diesel fuel & pour it into the pump base. Catch it in a bucket & reuse it. (Some folks use a hand garden sprayer.) Flush the pump base out 5 or 6 times. Do not start the engine to run the kerosene through the pump; kerosene and diesel fuel do not have any lubrication properties & you will damage your pump.

Some folks will tell you that this 'quick-clean' is not as effective as dropping the pump & doing a full job. I do not dispute that, but it worked for me (so far) for the past 3 years on my 1951 N. If you have the time, drop the pump; if not, you are at least getting some of the crud out of it.

Lastly.....tell us just what the hydraulics are doing or not doing; lots of folks here can help you fix it.

I have a part of a manuel but not the part of pulling out the valve, I just replaced all the oil according to # 3 and 4 in your link and hand cleaned out the sludge. The valve seamed sticky like I had to move it past the stops and I pressure leaked off over night. In the manuel I, had it talked about cleaning the valve when it was not working properly but it said to pull the valve After reading how you said to clean the valve I will do it that was. I am having someone come over friday to see about buying the N so I wanted to have it working its best for them. Also is there a way to give rep points you guy have been a GREAT help

when you say flush 5 or 6 times what are you flushing the diesel with? or are you just meaning flush 5 or 6 times with the diesel and let it drain over night. the refill with new oil.

Bruce when you say pump base do you mean the sump for the middle, meaning the middle drain plug area? If I use a hand sprayer do I need to worry about getting any into the tranny or rear end? Again thanks Keith

Don't let me get in the way here, Bruce, but I will kick in this 9N cut-away for help in discussing common areas, etc. Carry on, gentlemen.

If its a 8N drop the pump, you do not have to remove the lift cover, clean it right like its spose to b cleaned, or wast you time haft arse'in it with diesel, theirs no substitute for the correct repair, it will B good to go for another 50 years.... Why folks are willing to chance haft arse'in this job is beyond me,,, Its been proven that a spray wipe and go will not come close to cleaning the hydraulic sump, why take a chance, they don't make pumps any more, used pumps are expensive.... The chit left behind will ware out the hydraulic system, all of it. Its not a bad job, most DIY'ers can R&R a pump

it's ok to be "disagreeable". I didn't read the entire post & thought he was referring to the piston. That's why I posted the follow-up on "deleting dumb ( mine )posts". ;-)
