Valve Adjustment Ford 8N

Under each valve spring is a 7/16-inch adjuster. This is turned with a wreench in the conventional fashion, IF you have the left and right valve tappet tools that are also necessary to hold the lifter from turning while you make the adjustment. The tappet tools are sold on this site and most other N parts houses. Shop manual sez .012 for intakes and .014 for exhaust.

On the othr hand, if you have an earlier model that was never converted to adjustable tappewts, the job can only be done with the head off and all the valves loose, Adjusting rhe old style requires gridnign material from the end of the valve stem - not a job for an amature. If you have this older style, you will see no adjusters because there are none.

Good Luck

Do you have mushroom shaped valves at bottom? If you do they are non adjustable. However, they can be adjustable by a procedure outlined in the I&T-F-04 manual, that should be mandatory to own one of these tractors. I've been working on some kind of motorcycle, car, truck,or lawn mower for about 40 yrs and the first thing I did when I bought the 9n was to buy the manual. These motors have parts that were obsolete when they were made.lha

If your valve looks like the one on the left it is adjusted by removing it and grinding on the stem or valve seat. The valve on the right is a newer style and used with adjustable lifters (no picture)

You can go to my site and look at the how to section motor overhaul part 3 and in there I cover valve adjustments with adjustable lifters

ORIGINALLY, both styles of valves were "adjusted" by grinding the length off the ends of the valves. The adjustable tappet was something that came out (& may or may not have been installed during an overhaul) later in the life of the tractor. As I recall, they cost about $5 or $6 apiece times the eight required way back when the dollar was worth something so they were a hard sell to cash strapped farmer although we did later on put a few in.
