valve adjustment

How do you adjust the valves???
I just bought a 8N and the engine noise sounds like tappets clicking.
Is this something for a real mechanic or can a back yard Joe do it???

Although there are different ways, like drilling into the tappets....

The way Ford meant for it to be done was.....

With valve lifter holders.

And a thin wrench on the tappet adjuster.

Not hard, just a little time consuming. Would be easier if you pull the manifold as its in the way. I$T has a section on it. Pull the plugs, easier to turn the motor over. Plan on a set of gaskets and if your tractor has adjustable lifters its easier with the Johson tools unless someone drilled the block.

All good advice you are getting here. Mark your crank pulley for TDC and a second mark 180 degrees around. You will use these two marks to adjust all your valves, and it's easier to see on the pulley thn on the flywheel, JMHO.

Just remember that getting to thise adjustments is a lot of work, and when you have made them, you need to go over them again till you are satisfied that each one is set spot-on. I like to go over each tappet in the firing order, three times just to make certain each one is set accurately. My standard size wrenches worked fine, after I got the tappet-holding wrench set Dunk showed you.

Good Luck

Depends on whether or not you have adjustable lifters. The later 8N's had them, the early ones you had to grind the end of the valve to set the clearance.
