Valve Assembly Question

Decided to do a valve lap on my 50 8N this past weekend. Installed new guides, springs and seals. I noticed that when I tried to install the intake guides and valves with the notched screwdriver pry bar that I shaved a little bit of rubber off of the seals as they went down. I applied lubricant to bore and guide prior to installation. Is this something that I should be concerned about and need to start over? Thanks for any information.

yes you need them to seal on the intake not so much on the exhaust im sure someone can tell you more about it then me a shade tree mechanic

I think it would depend on what you mean by a "little bit". Just a small sliver of material I would not worry about too much, but i would make sure i got the piece out of the engine.IMHO

Some replacement seals are slightly oversize. When you put the guide in place it shaves off a little bit of the outer edge. They do seem to work OK. Thank the Chinese.

Just took my block to the machine shop for rebuild. The owner has done a large number of 8ns so I respect his opinion. As mentioned above the exhaust isn't as important for seal as intake, but they will both seal with use from carbon buildup. Some mechanics don't even use the rubber seals.
