valve guide retainer clips

I'm in the midst of overhauling the engine on my 2N. Has anyone run into trouble removing the black valve guide retaining clips? One came out but the others won't budge.

Those clips are "supposed" to fit inside a recess on the underside of that cast shelf. Take a large flathead screwdriver and put it through the exhaust or intake opening in the block and pry down on the guide from the top to press it down just a bit. This will allow the retainer to come out of this recess so it can be removed. If you are not going to reuse the guide, and easier way is just remove the valve and wack the guide down with a drift or large bolt.

I am rebuilding a 1950 side mount. I had trouble getting several of the clips off and the guides out. I soaked them with PB Blaster and let them set overnight. That fixed all but one. That one I had to remove the spring and valve. I then used a socket on an extention as a drift to drive down the guide. The guide was not damaged. I did not have the correct type of spring compresser so I had to remove the cam before I could get the spring off. The screw driver Dan mentioned can be ground down on one side behind the blade making something like a hook. This improves it's prying ability.
