Valve job dilemma?

After several weeks of soaking, tapping, coaxing, and waitingIwas finally able to free up and remove the valves and guides from my 1951 8N side mount. As you can see all eight valve guides had seals on them. Also I.discovered adjustable lifters but no valve rotators ( I can live with that!) Just to verify, when I replace thse parts with new- NO SEALS ON THE EXHAUST VALVES -correct? Is there some reasoning for this that a tractor moron (like ME) could understand? Thanks in advance!

The intake valve guides have negative pressure (vacuum) on the valve/port side which draws oil from the crankcase side past the guides if the rubber seals are not used.

There's NO reason the seals can't be used on the exhaust guides as well. They will seal some combustion byproducts (exhaust) out of the crankcase. But even without the seals on the exhaust guides, they will get gunked in place after a the engine is used a little and the guide-to-bore area will likely be sealed up anyhow.
And the exhaust heat will harden/char the rubber after a while.

That's why the guides are a little tough to knock out of the block at OH time.

Thanks Bob very good and understandable reply. I'm sure I will be begging for help as I proceed with other phases of "redoing" this tractor. I did try to post a pic but maybe I'm not allowed since I have only 9 posts, although I was able to post pics on VIN lost to time for Bruce to see! Anyway thanks

Rotators/Rotating valves were a up grade they are not interchangeable with the standard valve... Rotating valves are not for a beginner stay with the non free rotating standard valve set up...

thanks Hobo after reading the FO-4 regarding the free rotators I was quick to go with the standard set up. I mentioned that in my previous post cause the serial # of my 51 was after that upgrade according to John Smiths site. Thanks for the advice!

I think the free rotat'N deal for a N was a field upgrade/fix... I doubt many folks would work a N hard enuff to need the upgrade anymore... Unless I were gonna put at least 100 hr. a year on a N I would forgo them...

Your call-mine had seals on all of them-they were
not melted, charred or brittle-I went back with new
ones on all guides-I see no way it will hirt
anything and might just help something..

hanks Tomstill working on it! Maybe you can tell me why some valve train sets have six springs of one color and two of another.....curious?

Don't know about the color difference in this set--
in dealing with springs for dies at work I know
different colors usually means different strengths--
maybe someone can chime in and tell you--I know when
I redid my valves I replaced all springs anf still
had a huffing puffing in the exhaust--I did
everything I knew to do and was told to do--finally
took it to an old tractor guy and he found weak new
springs--check the lengths of all of them compared
to each other...curious to know what u find..

ill do Tom! The new set I did buy were all black ....having said that I will definitely compare them against each other and the old ones as well. I only wish I was at the point where my "Jenny" was huffing and puffing! I'm afraid I don't do anything very quick anymore, seems 17 Grandkids needs take up most of my "spare" time. Thanks again for your responses
