valve seal

I have a 51 ford 8n. I'm doing a on the tractor
engine rebuild. What I found, is some of the valve
seals rubber rings have been missing when I removed
them from the motor. Is there a hone to clean up the
inside of the block. There's a bit of build up of
carbon and the seals won't slide back into place.
Not really sure to do to clean the up. I really
don't want to pull the block if I don't have to.

The seals only go on the intake valves. Not needed on the exhaust valves even tho the grooves are there. lots of oil on them may help get them to go in.

OHV engines can benefit from valve seals,L head not so much.Why would you want to keep oil off the valve stems and guides.

Don't do much "honing" of the guide area. You don't want them wobbling around in there. Seals only on the intake valve. No exhaust seals.

This is a flathead engine with the valves and guides in the block and the rubber seals are vacuum not oil seals. They go on the outside of the guides and seal the valve guides to the block to prevent intake vacuum loss past the guides. They are not needed on the exhaust side since that is a positive exhaust pressure which can and does leak back into the crankcase. Since the valves are located in the block they are splash lubricated from below and do not require oil seals on the stems. Heed Zane's advice - don't try to hone the block bores.
