So the head gasket replacement is going as expected on the 560D. Block and heads are flat all seems normal. Question is: I have not pulled the valves/springs out of the head. Should I? And what maintenance should be done?

If a compression check was done and OK, putting valve seals on the stems (under the retainers on the stems and over the guides) is a good idea to limit oil consumption. If there was compression variation, or if the stems have noticeable side to side clearance, I would have the head reworked. Cheap insurance with much of the work already done. Jim

its a no brainer not to pull the valves for an inspection. if you are not familiar with what to look for have it checked at a machine shop. thae engines are very fussy on starting and if the valves are recessed that already one problem. plus inspect the head for cracks as they do crack and i have about 4 or 5 cracked heads sitting here. no way i would just replace the head gasket. thats a 200.00 item in itself. its not cheap to get them heads rebuilt properly , guides is pretty well a for sure thing, then seats most likely then the valves ,which you dont know till u inspect them. then the springs must be tested also throw the valve seals in the garbage! the oil does not get in-between the stem and guide. also none of these engines nor earlier ones came with seals. i have had enough of these heads apart to know what i am talking about. dont matter to me but with valve seals u will wear out the guides lots faster, then there goes your valve seats also when the valve starts walking around. look at the top of the guide , its on a taper the oil runs off! good head , good compression, good battery , working glow plugs they fire right up in a couple turns. you need the compression up around 375 psi. more questions ask. there is a process to follow on them junky felprow gaskets when the time comes.
