Variable speed motor question

I bought a small air handler unit to heat our basement and the fan runs fast and is noisy. I'd like to slow it down. I know some types of motors require a variable frequently drive and other types just need a little cheap dial but I don't know one type from another. By the picture can anyone tell if this motor can be slowed down with one of the cheap fan controls such as shown?

It is likely a shaded pole synchronous motor. As such it locks to 60hz when running. A variable resistance or voltage chopping control will not work. a variable frequency control might, but might also require a different capacitor to run without overheating. Best guess! Jim

Seeing your fan only uses 96 Watts (and no heating element) it it should work nicely with any dimmer switch or variable speed controller. I've done it for years on my wood stove fan as well as my 12" fan to circulate air between up and downstairs - never any issues.

I think you would be better off getting the medium speed version of your motor.
