Vellumoid Washers

Replacing seals in final drive of a styled model D. Has anyone come up with a good alternative to the vellumoid washers (D933R) used internally on the bottom six or so bolts. They are 1/16 thick and parts manual calls for 8-10 stacked per bolt...price from Deere is close to $9.00 for each washer!! Someone suggested to use lots of silicone but once dry will not be able to adjust drive chains....anyone tried o-rings?

On the quill bolts the later styled Ds used 8-10 per bolt of a D933R velumoid washer between the clamp and quill on the inside. Last time we ordered those from JD we got some rubber hose the thickness of that many washers to fit the bolt. You can make those yourself from rubber hose or use other types of sealing washers there. I have also used lead washers there too. The mating surface between quill and housing will have to be cleaned after the housings are off and just use a film of grease between them on assembly or you will have a problem with future chain adjustments. They need to come off anyway to do the job right and get the axle felts aligned right. To adjust chains have your tractor jacked up so the wheels can be turned forward a few turns and where the chain is tightest you should have 1" of slack. Rotate the top of axle quills forward in direction of arrow on case to adjust. Rotate wheels several turns forward again to make sure chain isn't too tight. A copy of Dir. 108 from JD or other vendors will help you a lot on the axle rebuild and other maintainance for your D.
