VERMEER WR20 wheel rake

Hi every one. Looking at buying a wheel rake.
And I like the look of the VERMEER WR20
I bale grass and hay grazer both round
and small square bales. I used a 3pt wheel
rake for hay grazer and it did good but
tried it in grass and it dug up the old
dead mat.It had only four wheels and I had to make two trips around the field to put two windrows together.The VERMEER WR20 would cut
that in hafe.Have you all used one and did
you like it ? Thanks Ross

I haven't used a Vermeer rake but an H&S 14 wheel hi-capacity rake. I think for grass hay you need to have less ground pressure on rake wheels than for Sudan.

I had a WR-20 for a while. It didn"t work well for my operation as the hay was to heavy for it. The Vermeer isn"t any different than the other brands, they work well on hay that is lighter than 1.5-2 tons to the acre. In hay that is above 2 ton to the acre you really need a high capacity rake. I use a Sitrex 12 wheel now.

I have had custom haybalers use 2 different brands of pull type wheel rakes try to rake my sudan with no luck. It was just too heavy for the wheel rakes. In both cases they had to bring in a side-delivery type rake. The pull type wheel rakes work fine for my coastal bermuda grass. Tom

Thanks for the info.The one I was looking at sold . So I will keep looking. The only time I need to rake
two together is in lite hay. My cutter is a 499NH
and cuts 12 foot windrows if I need to turn them
I use my 254 NH rake. But the last two years has been very dry in west central Texas so the hay is
awful thin.

I agree with you. Those fold in air wheel rakes that resemble a "butterfly with it's wings up" will not rake heavy hay because the tube frames block hay flow. It also harder to adjust windrow width. After several yrs of use the pivots get so worn they won't make a consistent windrow. My Hi-capacity H&S has rake wheels inside of frame next to hay windrows. I've raked grass hay that made 4 tons per acre(not this drought year). Also raked Sudan,Corn stalks,Maize stalks & Johnsongrass with no problems.
