Versatile 145 duals 18.4x34 to 23.1x30

Ok I got what might be dumb question but I?ve been looking online and a bunch of the old 145 Versatile?s have 18.4x34 duals mounted to 23.1x30 tires. How did they make that work? Would I have to have special bands made? I just found it odd but maybe I?m missing something. I would think you would need duals that are 30 rims. Any info would be great. I can find lots of 34 in duals but can hardly find any 30 in rim duals so if there is a way to make the 18.4x34 duals work for my 145 I?d like to make it happen.

"Belled" dual wheel adapter rings to do exactly what you want were COMMON "back in the day", an "off-the-shelf" item.

Likely a tractor boneyard that hasn't yet scrapped all their older stuff would have some.

Here's a photo from about 1979 of my "G-100", my late Uncle and his "D-145", and my "8630".

The D-145 had 23.1 -30 main tires, "belled" dual rings, and 28.4 X 34 duals.

Wish I had a closeup or the dual rings for you!

Not the much difference in width . Why not just ad a set of the original 30 inch tires and have srtip rolled to make them fit then clamp them on like a Stieger is. Same size would be easy to put the spacer rings in and make. Could even bend them over a round post. Or use an old rim to get the process started.

(quoted from post at 10:20:20 05/23/20) That?s neat do you still have these tractors

I still have the 8630, I sold the G-100 (318 Dodge engine, BTW) to a Versatile dealer MANY years ago, he had it fixed up and painted, I think it was sold when the dealership went broke in the 80's, and I lost track of it.

I no longer have that 145, but I have a different one that was sold locally and I am the second owner of, and I just bought an old "850" Versatile to keep it company.

Snap on / clamp on duals are another one of those things that have gone obsolete and are not common anymore, like tire tubes.

Used to be you could just order a set of "belled" or step spacers to go from 30-34 or 34-38. Very few carry clamp/snap on dual hardware anymore. Last place I knew of was Gempler's.

It works because the loaded radius of a 23.1x30 is similar to an 18.4x34, also a 14.9x38 conveniently enough.

Reason for doing this was obviously for cost. Duals were only used during tillage and sat out the rest of the year, so you spent as little as possible. Generally old tires were used for duals.

I looked all over for belled clamp on duals and can’t find any info on it. I have 2 sets of 34 in clamp on duals so I thought if I could just find the bands I’d have them put in and I’d be good to go but I might have to just find 23.1x30 duals. By the way neat picture you share. I have attached a picture of my 145. Hoping it can get a paint job and new tires this year.

What the heck is under the hood, looks to be an in-line turbodiesel! (Original engine was Cummins 470 cubic inch V-8.)

I currently have a "145" in storage with 18.4-34's with only the back end "dualled", with 18.4-34's

Where are you located?

I'm in N.D., and could check around for some "belled" bands, but I suppose you are no where near here?

Yes good guess on the reman! It’s a ih 466 from a bus. Runs great! Lots of power! The owner before me was a machine shop guy and he did all the work. Frame is stretched and so is the hood. The guy did an awesome job on it. I do need to add air conditioner those cabs get hot.
