Vibration damper rebuild

Can vibration dampers ( front pulley )from 4450and 8450 be rebuilt? A bit pricey @ $404 canadian at dealer. What are they worth south of the border? Seems a waste to just throw them in the junk pile.

I'm not 100% sure of the construction of your damper. All of the ones I have seen on Deere engines are the rubber member type. In other words, the inner portion is cast iron, then a rubber member inserted and the outer ring pressed on. The entire assembly is then baked in an oven to bond the rubber and metal.
After completion of the baking process a chisel is used to mark the inner and outer portions, this is so you can see if the outer ring has moved, if so the damper is junk.
Your John Deere operators manual should provide a recommended change out time in engine operating hours.

If you buy one from a salvage yard it may have more hours than the one you already have.
If you have a high hour engine I'd get on the internet and shop around.

You are bitching about 400 bucks compared to what a crankshaft replacement may cost. The balancer on my 4955 got changed last year when the water pump had to be replaced since it has 8000 hours anyway

This is the price of the dampner & the crankshaft. $404 looks CHEAP compared to R&R of cranksaft & dampner

I have heard that a bad balancer can break a crankshaft.

Dampers were(Maybe still are) built here in Indianapolis(Sweitzer Cummins)Used to farm for the test room boss. He once told me how those things were manufactured. Can't remember the exact details, but I know they are pressed together under hundreds of thousands of pounds of force.

The price is for the damper alone ,JD recommends they be changed after 5000hrs. And I realize a crank and replacement is much more expensive, I just wondered if they were rebuildable. Thanks for all the the info.
