vintage hammer

Found this at a yard sale, hoping some knowledgeable forum member will know what this is used for. I picked it up to be used at the wood splitter for those annoying splinters while using the wood splitter

Blacksmithing is such a lost art. I remember when I was little, 65+ years ago, I could not have been more than 10. There was a blacksmith shop at the edge of town, just pdown the road from my great grand parents house in a small village. Loved watching that man pounding on red hot iron. I never got to spend enough time there. But I could hear his hammers ring inside their house. They did not seem to like him much. They said he was mean but he would smile at me was watching. I snuck down to watch whenever I got a chance.

As others have pointed out, it is a hot chisel used in blacksmithing. The reason for the handle is to keep your hand a safe distance from the hot metal as you use it. It is commonly used as a one person tool, with the hot metal on the anvil and one hand holding the chisel and the other the hammer.
