Volt. Regulator

My 850 isn't charging. Generator is OK. The wiring checks out against the schematic. But the reg. that's on the tractor has 3 coils, not 2 coils like the schematic calls for.
How can I troubleshoot this problem?

would full-field the generator by applying battery voltage to the FIELD terminal of gen with a jumper wire & observe ammeter for charging current. If still nothing, add one additional jumper wire (total of 2) from ARMATURE terminal of gen to Battery terminal & observe for charge. If get charge either or both ways, then you need a new regulator, as gen is OK, since we effectively bypasses the regulator. Or there is a wiring problem. Don't leave jumpers in place with engine off for much time.

Close the cutout points by hand with the engine running. If you have a charge the shunt coil on the cut out is open. This coil is wound with fine wire that breaks at the solder joint. Its wound under a heavy series coil.
