Voltage Regulator

8N 6 volt with generator. Purchased a new voltage regulator AGAIN, polarized it and charged fine for about two hours, then it stop charging the last 20 minutes as I finished mowing. I had this same problem with the previous regulator. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Cheap (not inexpensive) junk regulators.
Had the same problem several times.
Both A circuit and B circuit.

About one in three are my odds of getting a good one.
Hopefully wherever you bought it will exchange it.
Many places will not exchange electrical parts.

You aren't polarizing the regulator, you are polarizing the generator.
It will stay polarized unless it is left without power for a very long time
or hooked up backwards so as to polarize it in the opposite direction.

I don't think the battery was charged up, because it went from charging at about 10 amps to a -0 in the matter of a second. Also, when I turn on the lights, it discharges -10 even at a high RPM. This is the fifth regulator that I have installed. Taking the air cleaner off each time to install the regulator is getting "old"

I did the exact same thing. When the fourth regulator didn't work for long (a month) I bought an alternator. They are cheap Chinese junk and you will hunt at $40 a pop to find a good one. I think the alternator was $30 - no lie.

Oh, and this was right after I rebuilt the genny. Anyone need a freshly rebuilt 6 volt generator?

Yes, poor quality manufactured regulators.

If you have an O'Reilly's nearby, they have good old made in the USA regulators that have a lifetime warranty.

If you have the 8N10001 generator, the part number is BWD R190. Sadly, they do not offer a V/R for the 8N10000B generator.

I bought one of these from O'Reilly's about 2 years ago. Works like a champ. I used a troublshooting flow chart posted by Bruce(VA) and Soundguy before buying to find out what my problem was.
I bought from O'Reilly's online, if you spend a few bucks more you can get free shipping.
Thanks to Dollar Bill, Bruce,& Soundguy.

(quoted from post at 21:05:36 05/25/14) I converted to 12v after my third regulator one of the better decisions I've made.

I did this as well, those regulators here in Canada are about 30-40% more than what you guys pay in the States

Try this. Take the cover to the volt reg off. With the tractor running take the eraser end of a wooden pencil and push down alternnately on the two wound coils. Does it now charge? If it is good, Put cover back on. It may not be a permenent fix, but works for me.
