Voltage regulator

on my 1957, 12 volt TO-35 it seems to go through voltage regulators.

the original Delco Remy voltage regulator lasted 25+ years.

But these cheap china made voltage regulators that i find at the local auto part stores just do not last.

any suggestions on a brand to buy?

American made,,lol,,,any more who make any thing that will last...just need to check/look at the part and see where it's made..draw of the lucky one..

Seller by the name of trio diode, might be one word, on fleabay sells parts. Inquire with him. He use to run a TO-20 back in his younger days.

I bought an Arrow brand (Chinese) here on this Website and it was worthless. Cut points were very soft and kept sticking together. I called and complained and they sent me out a Tisco brand(also Chinese). It was much better built, twice as heavy, and works fine. Seems to be build just as rugged as an OEM AC Delco.

Unfortunately that's why i switched from genny to alt. after spending about $100 on regulators i just could not get them to work right so stuck the genny on the shelf stuck a cheap alternator on tractor done. It's not a show tractor work & play.

Had a generator rebuilt for an SC Case I have at a local generator shop. Had the tech match up a regulator at the time. The VR cost as much as the genny rebuild but they both work great with no issues. Allan.

What I do: Find decent ones at salvage yard. Clean & restore as needed. Usually have to repaint cover, replace shock mounts & cover gasket. Adjust charging voltage to suit. This can be a PITA but be patient, it's worth it. Unit must be in same position orientation as mounted while tuning. Hope this helps some of you. KB

thanks for the replys.

seems like others have had the same problem with low quality regulators as I have.

I would change to an alternator in a minute, but on my old TO-35 the tach runs off the back of the generator.

for a while I have been looking for a electronic low rpm tach 4" that would fit in the tach hole

If I could find one, then I could change the generator out for an alternator.

I just like having the tach, guess I am just amazed that it still works,

for now, I will just pick up another O'Reilly's brand Borg/Warner regulator and see if I can make another garden season.
In days pasted if you got a Borg/Warner part you had something, but guess alot of things have changed.

I have tried cleaning the contacts, opening the contacts etc: but nothing seens to work, other than buying a new one.

When it comes to Borg Warner stuff...usually if you get the Borg Warner Select parts they are good parts. The regulator on my MF 175 quit and I tried one of the cheaper ones and it wouldnt charge.I got the Select one and it charges fine.Even on cars the cheaper ones dont work good cause alot of them are solid state inside instead of having points in it.In my experience...all those solid state ones are junk!!!

today when i pickup up my voltage regulator ask my parts store guy about Borg Warner Select parts.

He had never heard of Borg Warner Select parts.

Where do you buy this level of parts.

Thanks,
Fred
