Voltage to magneto

I put an alternator on my H Farmall that has a magneto and can only get voltage at the resistor but when I connect the wire to the magneto I lose the voltage.

Tell us what you are doing in a bit clearer description. As others have said a true magneto has internal magnets and an armature that spins in them creating it own electricity to create the spark. If you have left the engine in the same position all the time you were making these connections your mag might still be fine. Apparently the points were closed which grounds out the terminal on the mag. If you have tried to start it with voltage on the mag kill terminal it is very likely you have damaged the magneto. Now if you are calling a battery powered distributor a magneto then we will have to explore your situation farther.
