They all look the same on the outside but the difference would be in the advance curves. The w9 would have a diff. Shaft and weights if it’s advancing in the opposite direction I would think. You need to go by the dist number as different ones have diff. The real gas start guru was Brian Krog of minnesota. But he has been gone for several years.He farmed quite a bit of ground with a whole fleet of gas start diesels.IIRC,the gas W9 is the same clockwise rotation as the gas M/H. It's only the diesel models that use a counter clockwise rotation.The advance curve may be different,but it would run with athedifferent distributor.I think that a distributor from a gas start diesel would run on a gas tractor(and vise versa),As long as the plug wires are in the correct position. I dont know if the diesels have advance wts or not as I have not looked. Someone more knoledgeable can chime in.

Yes, turns opposite of H and M and lot of others. Reason is because the W-9 has a idler gear between crank and cam gear. One for a 9 has a different breaker plate, weight guard weights and point cam. Diesel ones with advance can be converted to use on a W-9 by adjusting size of advance limit hole to needed size and using advance springs from the gas choices. As posted some diesels just had a straight distributor shaft with a rotor on top. is it possible to transfer the advance mechanism to a distributor for say a farmall m?A DISTRIBUTOR FOR A W9 is only for a W9! Dad was there and done that. About ruined the engine because he put on the wrong distributor. Rotation is different! Instead of advancing the curve it retards the timing. Maybe you can rework one off of another letter tractor.
NO IT DOES NOT SPRING BACK. That is for a MAGNETO! Distributors do not have that feature.
When you can't find a W-9 distributor the easiest fix is a diesel distributor with advance. Every part is the same as a W-9 one but the distributor shaft and advance springs. Use gasoline springs, shaft doesn't need changed just slot advance limit hole to give 35 to 40 degrees max at crank. Hole in the diesel only gives around 8 degrees max at crank. Have general size of holes or slot needed for max advance wrote down somewhere if I can find. H and M drive camshaft from crank gear. Due to bigger block used in W-9 to keep things more compact a idler gear was driven by crank gear then idler to cam gear. Cam turns opposite of a M. Lot of the diesel do have advance weights the same part as a 9 gas. Picture of two diesel shafts, the straight shaft that used no weights and one with small hole that used weights. Bigger hole and two extra weight guard mount holes was added when experimenting on another application.The W9 distributor turns CCW as does the WD9. BUT THE W9 AND WD9 USE DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTORS.. The diesel distributors don't have advance weights under the breaker plate.
