Wagner loader cylinder repack

I've repacked cylinders before but they always had a specific rebuild kit for them. I'm kinda winging it here on this one. Please point out of I am doing something wrong or... stupid.

I got the big packing nut off pretty easy, the old packing put up a fight. I pulled a top ring, 6 packing rings and a bottom ring. They appear to be fiber of some kind, with a plastic ring between each one. 6 rings total, plus the top and bottom ring.

McMaster has sets of PTFE V rings, and the male and female top n bottom ring sets. It is the only v packing they have in 2"IDx2-1/2"OD so thats what I ordered. The rod size measured exactly 2"OD and the best looking old ring measures 1/4" wide so... seem to be right.

The first 12" of the rod is in rough shape, I'll smooth it out as best as I can... its gonna wear these new seals out over time probably but, they are what I have and, its a learning curve. If they go in good and seal good, replacing them doesn't seem to be too hard. If I get a couple yrs use out of them thats good enough for now. Maybe I can find better cylinders or a better loader in the meantime.

I have to get in there better and clean it up. That last ring stuck to the metal n places. I need a better set of picks.

The rings were distorted and buckled, I think someone put rins in that were a size too big and tried to squish em in place. That explains the leak.

The big nut needs a good cleaning but seem in good shape.

So far, am I missing anything? Any sound advice to putting the new seals in?

Todays problem... I was cleaning the gland nut and there is a seal in it also. The grove it was in was packed with old dirt and grease crud.. I have to clean it better.

I removed it and its an odd looking seal... Some kinda wiper I assume. Does anyone know what the proper name of this kind of seal is?

I would call it wiper if it was exposed to the elements. I worked at a hydraulic shop for a year 99-2000. There was standard fractional and metric sizes, they all fit snug. Those could have been the wrong size or had comtinated oil in them.
 
The part at the outer end of the gland nut is a wiper. Its purpose is to wipe dirt off the rod, to minimize wear to the gland and the packing rings. Baum Hydraulics and Hercules catalogs both show wipers of the type in your picture.

Edit.. looks like it is called a KW wiper ring. "KW-2000 is a KW Wiper Ring with an ID 2.000 X OD 2.375 X Height 0.190 measurements are Rod Size 2.000 inch X Bore Size inch "

They want $13 to USPS mail me 1 ring. I'll look elsewhere of just use the O rings I have.

It doesn't take $13 bucks in postage to mail 1 $9 ring that weighs almost nothing.... I hate it when a company does that.

If its job is simply to keep the rod clean... the O ring will suffice for now. The rod is pretty scarred up
on the first foot of it. Even a right wiper wont last long. I smoothed it off pretty well but its still rough. At some point in the future I will either have to replace the lift piston with a good used one or a new one.

This is one of those "as long as it will last" repairs. It'll work long enough to see if everything works.

Knowing what seal stack and correct wiper goes in the thing puts me one step ahead, if I find a set of used ones or a junk loader with clean cylinder rods.


Edit x2... I found them on Ebay for $8 & $5.99 shipping.
Knowing what stuff is called is half the battle sometimes.

ou have a point concerning the rough shaft cutting up the wiper ring. The thing I would be concerned with other things in the system. I remember gear pumps being pretty forgiving. Vein type pumps probably not as dirt friendly. Unless it has been added the system probably doesn't have a filter inline, just a screen. I'm thinking a scared up wiper seal may be enough to knock off a grain of sand where an oring might let dirt roll over it when the rough part of the shaft retracts. On the other hand it may not matter too much, someone with recent hands on could give better advice.
 
I'll put some sort of boot on the end to keep the end of the rod to keep it clean enough. The vpacking seems to be deep enough that the rough part doesn't get to it much. It turns out to be a very simple job to replace the seals even if they don't but a few yrs.

I read somewhere online while doing searches on repacking antique hydraulics, that in some cases, the V packing can be substituted with square rope packing coiled around the rod however many turns it takes to match the Vpack height. I don't know if it will work on these cylinders but, its an interesting idea to keep in mind. McMaster sells a bunch of different kinds of packing rope.

When the other side starts to leak, I might try it just to see if it works.

The next seal up job is the controller. It weeps pretty good where the spools exit the body. The manual shows its just a flat or O ring under the lid.

Or I could just hang a bucket under it. :lol:

I would stick with vee packing.
I would also toss that old valve and replace it with something much better.

I agree... the vpacking looks to be the better choice. I'm just curious to see how the rope option will work.

Sometimes I'm a sucker for punishment.

As for the valve, I also agree a new one would be the better way to go BUT... I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment, so if an O ring or a flat ring will seal it up better than it is, so much the better.

If not, A newer better valve will have to be put on.

That'll be a whole other episode of something I know almost nothing about.

In the meantime...a search for a step thru loader goes on. I don't want to dump a lot of work and effort into this loader only in a couple months or a year to find a perfectly good step thru for half what I invested in this old one that is worth next to nothing.
 
I put the repacked cyl back on the loader today, no leaks, that size O ring is a little fat for the grove and snug on the rod.... but its a good dry leak free seal job.

For now anyway.
