Why would it matter which model?
It doesn't matter if he has an N, Jube, Hundred, Allis Chalmers, Farmall, Hercules, Buda or Onan. He has passages blocked in his carb.
If he stated that it would only run on half choke then spark could be the problem and your question makes more sense.

put two washers on top of carb bolts to make sure you are tightening carb to intake mine acted that way I had air leaking at carb/intake point.

Glyn, odds are that you have a fuel flow problem. (been there!)

I found that my gas tank had a bunch of dirt/rust fines in it and that was stopping up the three filters/screens.

First of all, you should open up the fuel valve no more than two full turns. If you open it up all the way, you get into the 'reserve,' meaning that you are sucking gas from the bottom of the tank and that, of course, it where all the dirt is.

Just in case you don't already know.... there are three filters:
One sits on top of the fuel valve assembly and sticks up into the gas tank. It's possible that this one has corroded away. If so, you should replace it. Otherwise, clean the one that's there.

There is a flat, round screen on the gas bowl of the shut-off assembly.

The third one is in the brass elbow fitting between the fuel line and the carb.

Remove the drain bolt at the bottom of the carb and open up the shutoff valve. You [i:06fb59d6a2]should[/i:06fb59d6a2] get a really strong flow of fuel coming out of the carb. Catch it in a quart jar and let it run for a while. The flow should not peter out but remain strong. Don't just check the flow by removing the fuel line above the carb! You need to see what's going [i:06fb59d6a2]through[/i:06fb59d6a2] the carb!

I suspect that it will just sort of dribble.

You'll probably want to clean out your carb but don't stop there. When this happened to me I took the shotgun approach and took care of everything. I removed the tank and took it to a radiator shop and had it boiled/steam cleaned. (some will suggest "sealing" the tank but I'm not a fan of this.
I put in a new shut off assembly with the two new filters. I put in a new fuel line and replaced the filter in the elbow fitting at the carb. I made sure that my gas cap was venting. Lastly, I did a carb job.

Once you get it all fixed, keep your tank filled to the brim between use to cut down on condensation inside the tank, which rusts it out.

Have not had a fuel related problem since I did this about seven years ago.

Because needing full choke to run can be caused by a few more things than a clogged carb.

For example......telling him that one or more of his three fuel screens could be clogged would waste my time & confuse him if he had a NAA.

Bruce; that response got me curiuos: the way i read that it imples the naa does not have the 3 screens? mine does. maybe i'm misunderstanding?

irst of all thanks for all the replys.#1 its a 50 model 8n tractor.sorry I didn't let you know.next I did overhaul it, but not a very good job. I will do it again. next I replaced the sediment bowl assy. checked all three fitlters clean. pulled the plug bottom of carb before overhaul, just dribbled.im not sure if it leaks air at throttle shaft.i will put two washers on mounting bolts.i tried propane for leaks around manifold before this problem . didn't notice any change.i will let you know as soon as I find the problem again thanks.

Try the propane test around the carb too.
