Was it worth it?

A friend just picked up this A for $200. Engine turns over. Haven't really dug into it yet to check things out. Just kinda curious if that was a steal or a okay deal?
Now he decides wether he just lets sit behind the barn or starts dumping money into parts for it.

I would say that is about the correct price for it in that condition but as said cover the exhaust or the engine will be locked up sooner or latter

He better put the other 2 spark plugs back in too.

That tow strap just happen to land there or is somebody planning on pulling it by the tie rod?

It looks like an early one to me, 1939 or 1940 (no starter provisions, early magneto switch happen to jump out at me). I wouldn't mind finding an early one with those features (or lack of I guess...) In my neck of the woods, you did alright. Tires and possible rims will be the pricey part to replace.

It looks like a Dzus socket on the side of the grille where the hood would latch, which would make it a real early one.

Does he have the hood? An early hood with the Dzus fasteners is going to be hard to find.

He will be better off going out and buying one already redone. He could part this one out and make his money back plus some.

The only guy that knows the answer to that question is the guy that bought the tractor. Depends on what he wants to do with it. It will definitely cost more to get back into running condition than he can ever get out of it later but to some people that's not an issue.Personally I would love saving a tractor like that even knowing how much it would cost. Others make decisions based on cost. Its up to the guy to decide what he wants to do and if it was worth it.

I bought one like that about 10 years ago, $200. cracked block behind the carb and truck tires on the rear. Cleaned the break up real good and glued the 2" X 12" piece back in with JB weld. Got it running and sold it for $500

Talked to him again today. Engine DOES NOT turns over but he did get the hood it with it and 4 good rims so I'd say he still did pretty good. Says he's probably going to fix it up just for a project, doesn't need the money or want to sell it.

I gave 300 for this one and it didn't look much better. Dad bought it new though and brother quit using it and it sat outside for over 15 years.

If he puts another $1500 (half that in tires) into it he will have a tractor that is fixed up but not restored and worth $800-1200.

We typically give no less than $400 for those and part them out. It'll take time that way but you'll triple your money plus some while saving someone elses tractor by providing parts.
