Water in 8 speed trans

Hi, I have a ford 4000 3 cyl diesel with the 8 speed trans. It keeps getting water in the trans oil. I believe it is leaking in during rain but I cannot find where. There are no rubber boots over the shifter points but I cannot seem to find a part number for them (if they even exist) I am suspicious that it gets in there but it looks pretty water tight can anyone help?

Very likely that water is running down the shifter and then getting in. Common on any tractor. As for a part number call or go to a Case/IH/New Holland/ford dealer they should be able to tell you that. nnalert shows them in there catalog so I bet it you checked this site will also have them for around $5 or less as per my catalog they are $3.29 so this site will be close to that. number is 8N7277 which sounds a lot like a ford number to me

It's most likely a condensation problem... It's very common. Either work the tractor hard enough to get the oil hot enough to boil the water out... or change the oil more often.

Every time a warm front comes up from the south in the winter or spring it brings moisture laden air and your transmission sucks some of it in. Then when it gets cold again it rains inside your housings.

My 5000 gets water in the trans. A couple of times per year, I just crack the drain plug a few turns after it has been standing, and the water drips out.

On the shift lever there is a mushroom looking cap that slides over the lever to repel the weather. There are 2 o-rings under that cover to seal the water from going down the lever. Part number 87016S94, or whatever it might have changed to by now. Couple those o-rings leaking with the condensation, might answer your question.

Could be either and if you know it's not coming in via the shifter then it is in fact caused by weather changes, aka condensation. Happens all the time.

Your engine gets hot and usually burns off the condensation internally, but especially in the winter time if you pull your oil fill cap off and look on the under side of it, the white stuff you see is water and oil mixed. Same thing.

Having worked in weather effected equipment, the only way you can 100% stop it is via a hermetic seal which is usually glass bonded to metal, or metal soldered or welded to metal.
